Three biggest South African bottled water companies might get their trading licenses suspended. One of the companies is said to be a Coca-cola subsidiary.
The companies were found guilty of bottling contaminated water and distributing it in Mpumalanga, Limpopo and parts of Gauteng. The SABS conducted an investigation after people complained about severe diarrhea and fever after drinking bottled water.
According to the SABS the bacteria found in the water is more common in Joburg water purification plants were they re-circle sewage water.
“bottled water is barely regulated in South Africa so for them to use tap water or river water is not illegal, we only get involved when the water becomes a threat to public health”
People who recently bought the water and have the above mentioned symptoms are advised to seek medical attention.
