An 18-year-old Cape Town woman was arrested and charged with child abuse. Police say that she used her 5-month-old daughter as a weapon – to beat up her baby’s father.
Police said that after she struck her boyfriend with the infant, Phindile Mdluli dropped the child face first into the sand at the beach.
Phindile and her 19-year-old boyfriend were arguing at the beach and it turned violent. Police say that Phindile hit her baby’s father “several times in the face with a closed hand” before using her baby “as a weapon.”
Witnesses said, she swung the infant “like a bat” before “the baby was dropped in the sand, face down.”
Phindile’s boyfriend, the child’s father, quickly flipped the infant upright since she was unable to turn over on her own. Witnesses also told cops that Phindile subsequently “snatched” her son from the man’s arms and walked away with the child “dangling,” without her head being supported.
As Phindile walked up a set of boardwalk stairs, the baby’s head hit a railing due to her “carelessness,” according to the report, which notes that investigators got verbal statements from about 20 witnesses.
