Reports: Traffic officers are racking in hundreds of thousands per month in bribes

In a study conducted by a private organisation known as the TRUT route patrol officers and municipal traffic officers are racking in hundreds of thousands a month on bribe.

According to the organisation they were able to interview 5000 former traffic officer and 3000 highway patrol police officers who worked between 1994 and 2016.

The average bribe revenue per officer is R6000 a week, during festive season like Christmas and easter they average R10 000 per week. Most of them admitted to not even caring about their own salaries.

“At some point I did not touch my own salary for a year straight”. Said one officer who was fired in January 2016 after a bribe charge.

High way patrol officer can even make R50 000 on a good day especially if they come across an illegal  substance shipment.

“People shipping R10 million in illegal substance usually drive with around a million in bribe money and they will give you an offer you can’t refuse”

According to municipal officers for private vehicles they just look at you and know that if the find a little fault in your car or accuse you of speeding you will pay.
